Dawn

A few days ago I wandered at dawn. Early morning is my favorite time to walk, before the day unfolds. With the incredible light came a symphony of sounds…song birds twittering and geese honking overhead.

So much activity and excitement in the natural world.

As I listened to this beautiful white-crowned sparrow sing his heart out, I had a remembering.

I’ve heard it said that within each moment and with each breath comes the possibility of a fresh start, the past a faded memory and the future a mystery.

As I marveled at the morning, I took a deep breath and welcomed the new day.

And in that moment I felt the Earth’s promise that the best is yet to come...

Determined

He looked fiercely determined, this beautiful yellow-headed blackbird posturing to attract a mate.

As I watched him, I had a thought. There was nothing lukewarm about this bird. I suspected he lived each day as a grand adventure, fully embracing each and every experience. I envied him.

And I had a wondering. How am I living my days? With intention and enthusiasm, or simply repeating old, worn-out patterns?

I suspect it’s time to look deeper.

Grateful for the inspiration, I took a breath and wandered on…

All is Well

When I’m unsettled or uncertain, I often turn to the natural world. It’s in nature that I’m comforted, and often find answers to my questions and ponderings. I had such a day not long ago.

And on that day, I watched this beautiful hawk glide across the sky. Then he rested by a stream for a while, partially hidden by the grasses.

As I watched him, my human concerns began to fade and I remembered a quotation. ‘Animals are so agreeable. They ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.’

And I appreciated that.

As the hawk took flight, I felt somehow reassured. I knew I could trust that life’s challenges always resolve themselves and lessons become clear in time.

And in that moment I was once again reminded…all is well.
