I was delighted to see them…two Virginia rails. Generally secretive by nature, they briefly appeared at the edge of a wetland.
As I watched them, I had a thought. I’ll never know them or join them in their day. After all, they’re destined to be wild, never tamed.
Yet I felt a connection to them as fellow beings on this beautiful planet. And I honored them for their unique contribution to the web of life.
So amazing…the natural world.

A few days ago I wandered at dawn. Early morning is my favorite time to walk, before the day unfolds. With the incredible light came a symphony of sounds…song birds twittering and geese honking overhead.
So much activity and excitement in the natural world.
As I listened to this beautiful white-crowned sparrow sing his heart out, I had a remembering.
I’ve heard it said that within each moment and with each breath comes the possibility of a fresh start, the past a faded memory and the future a mystery.
As I marveled at the morning, I took a deep breath and welcomed the new day.
And in that moment I felt the Earth’s promise that the best is yet to come...

He looked fiercely determined, this beautiful yellow-headed blackbird posturing to attract a mate.
As I watched him, I had a thought. There was nothing lukewarm about this bird. I suspected he lived each day as a grand adventure, fully embracing each and every experience. I envied him.
And I had a wondering. How am I living my days? With intention and enthusiasm, or simply repeating old, worn-out patterns?
I suspect it’s time to look deeper.
Grateful for the inspiration, I took a breath and wandered on…
